100 Million years ago the group of brown seaweed (Phaeophyceae) that is Wakame/Mekabu developed. It contains “fucoxanthin” and “chlorophyll” — valuable polysaccharides like alginic acids and fucoidan.

The founders
MASAMI was created in 2020 by CEO Lynn Power and co-founder James Hammet and his husband Masahiro Sasaki. Inspired by the centuries-old tradition of Masa’s family, who incorporated ocean botanicals into their beauty routines and diet, sourced from the majestic bays of Otsuchi (Iwate prefecture). Following the destruction of the bays and marine life by Tsunami of 2011, MASAMI launched The MASAMI Institute which supports local marine biology research to help protect ocean life and the surrounding communities. MASAMI, the ultimate in botanical hydration, launched with Mekabu Hydrating Shampoo, Conditioner, Styling Cream and Shine Serum, followed in 2023 by the Wabi Sabi Scalp Scrubber and Fast Drying Hair Towel, and soon, by popular demand, mekabu body wash.

All of MASAMI’s products are infused with mekabu powder, where we source it fresh from a family owned seaweed company in Iwate, northeastern Japan. All of their products are food grade. They harvest, dry and grind the mekabu to our specifications.
MASAMI combines centuries old understanding of ocean botanicals with state-of-the-art clean beauty formulations to deliver the hydrating benefits of mekabu in a high performing product.
